Paestum

Paestum is just a few minutes away from our gastronomic heaven. The site has three well preserved Greek temples: 2 dedicated to Hera and the other to Athena. All of the artifacts have been moved to the nearby museum. The most dramatic piece in the collection is the Tomb of the Diver.

Tenuta Vannulo

Both Andy and I have been looking forward to this day, but for very different reasons. I want to see the water buffalo (and eat yummy cheese) and Andy is excited about the Greek ruins of Paestum. Neither of us was disappointed.

Our group is visiting Tenuta Vannulo where they raise water buffalo and use the milk to make the most wonderful cheese I have ever eaten. This is a small scale operation. They only make a fixed amount of cheese and they usually sell out before noon. We get a look at the men making the mozzarella and then see the buffalo. These buffalo live a life of ease. There are automated milking machines and the buffalo just come over when they are ready. There are also back massagers so the buffalo can have a nice massage. I'm not kidding!

The real treat is the lunch. All the food was either grown or made on site. My salad had the most delicious tomatoes I have ever eaten and the cheese was just out of this world!

Memorable Meals:

Ricotta cheese and spinach crepe, salad with mozzarella and ricotta cheese, banana flavored yogurt at Tenuta Vannulo
